Onion and Apple Salad (Sweet, Tangy & Refreshing)

Onion and Apple Salad is a refreshing and unique cold dish. The onion adds a mild kick, while the apple brings a sweet, crisp crunch. Tossed in a simple sweet and tangy dressing, it’s layered, appetizing, and perfect alongside grilled meats or rice.

🌴 Ingredients:

· 1 apple (cut into thin strips)
· 1/2 onion (cut into thin strips)

🌴 Aromatics:

· 1 stalk cilantro (chopped, optional)
· A small pinch of toasted white sesame seeds (for garnish)

🌴 Seasonings:

· 1 tbsp light soy sauce (about 10ml)
· 2 tbsp Chinkiang vinegar (about 20ml)
· 1 tsp sugar (about 5g, to enhance flavor)
· 1 tbsp sesame oil (about 10ml)
· A pinch of salt

🌴 Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onion
Cut the onion into thin strips and soak in ice water for 10 minutes. Drain well. ⚠️ Note: Never skip the ice water bath; it removes the harsh spiciness and makes the onion crisp. I’ve tried skipping it, and the onion was too pungent to eat.
  2. Prepare the Apple
Core the apple and cut it into thin strips, similar in size to the onion. To prevent browning, soak the apple strips in lightly salted water for 1 minute, then drain. ⚠️ Note: Use the apple immediately after cutting, or it will turn brown.
  3. Make the Dressing
In a small bowl, mix the light soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, and a pinch of salt. ⚠️ Note: The ratio of sugar to vinegar is about 1:2 for the perfect balance.
  4. Mix and Serve
Place the onion and apple strips in a large bowl, pour in the dressing, and mix well. Sprinkle with cilantro and sesame seeds, and serve. ⚠️ Note: Let it sit for 5 minutes before serving for better flavor.
